Pricing and Plans

With eFax, you either get eFax Pro or eFax Corporate. The difference between these two plans is clear. Pro is suitable for small to medium-sized businesses with a monthly fax count of 200 pages. When billed annually, you can get this plan for a starting price of $15.79. You must note that eFax will charge a $10 fee for setup. As for Corporate, this plan is ideal for enterprises with high-volume faxing needs. You can tailor this plan to meet your specific requirements.

Meanwhile, the eFax alternative, FaxBurner, has a free monthly package good for 25 inbound and 5 outbound pages. With it, you get a disposable fax number that expires after 24 hours. If you upgrade to get a permanent fax number, you can choose between its Professional plan at $12.95 per month with 500 inbound and outbound pages or Premier at $22.95 per month with 2,000 inbound and outbound pages.

Are eFax and FaxBurner safe?

FaxBurner uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols to encrypt transmitted data and prevent cyberattacks from leaking sensitive data.

Meanwhile, eFax uses TLS 1.2 and 256-bit AES encryption to protect faxes in transit and at rest. It also offers an enhanced security option where users can stop receiving potentially harmful faxes. eFax also doesn’t collect or process sensitive personal data without consent.

eSignature Integration

The eFax web interface has a dated look that reminds you of a webmail interface from the late 1990s. While its clunky interface could benefit from a design makeover, it gets the job done. On the other hand, its mobile apps have better and more intuitive functionality. eFax also has a desktop app for Windows that syncs seamlessly with its web platform. Across all channels, you can tag fax messages and arrange them into folders. You can also access admin settings and control features like its enhanced security option.

FaxBurner follows a “mobile first” approach and skips the web interface completely. While you can log in to your account via browser, you must download its dedicated Android or iOS app to send a fax. Or, if you’re working on a desktop, you can utilize its email-to-fax feature to send faxes directly from email. If you need to send a quick fax, its free option gives you a disposable fax number that expires after 24 hours. All you need is to create an account to start sending faxes for free.

Is FaxBurner HIPAA compliant?

Unfortunately, FaxBurner doesn’t comply with HIPAA rules despite its security features. The online fax service does not offer a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), regardless of your chosen plan. A BAA ensures the company’s accountability for safely handling protected health information.

The FaxBurner alternative, eFax, has a HIPAA-compliant plan. Still, you must note that this fax service will only provide a signed BAA if you are an eFax Corporate user. Otherwise, you must subscribe to it or upgrade your existing Pro account. Other than HIPAA, it’s worth noting that the fax service is also HITRUST CSF certified, adding an extra layer of assurance.

Can you sign faxes on the eFax and FaxBurner platform?

Both FaxBurner and eFax have digital signing capabilities. With FaxBurner, you can add an electronic signature after uploading the document. You can also use any previous signatures. eFax gives you two ways to sign your fax digitally. You can drag and drop a saved signature or swipe your finger across the screen.

Do they provide APIs and developer support?

eFax’s Corporate Plan provides feature-rich fax APIs that can seamlessly integrate with other enterprise systems using a versatile XML Faxing Software Developer’s Kit (SDK). You can connect your EMR, EHR, Accounting, and sales platforms and send faxes straight from these systems. You can also set a URL per fax number, allow barcode scanning per inbound fax, and display scanned data from barcodes along with the fax. There’s also a page-splitting feature. When enabled, this feature will post inbound faxes as separate pages.

FaxBurner lacks all of these capabilities since it doesn’t have an API. You can only use your registered email or mobile apps for sending and receiving faxes.

How about fax numbers?

FaxBurner gives you two options for a fax number. You can either have a disposable temporary number or a toll-free permanent number. The disposable number is suitable for one-time use and is free of charge. Meanwhile, the permanent one is ideal for recurring use, but you can only keep it if you pay a monthly fee.

eFax comes with local, toll-free, and international numbers. You can choose your own number or transfer your existing one. The fax service also allows you to have up to 10 fax numbers.

Does FaxBurner have features for cloud storage integration

eFax connects with several popular cloud storage services, so you can easily attach items from these services straight to your fax messages. You can also efficiently share files since the service allows attachments of up to 3GB. If you prefer to send a downloadable link, you can simultaneously send it to 20 email addresses. The link remains active for three months, leaving plenty of time for recipients to download and view your faxes.

FaxBurner doesn’t mention any cloud storage integration and only allows up to 25MB in file attachments per email. Anything that exceeds this size must be split into smaller segments. Also, you can only fax documents in PDF format.

Should you choose eFax or FaxBurner?

If you need to send a quick fax for free, go for FaxBurner. Its free plan is the best solution for a one-time fax need. However, you must note that it does not comply with HIPAA, so you can’t use it to fax health documents containing sensitive patient information.

eFax is a better alternative to FaxBurner since it’s HIPAA-compliant and has more features geared toward healthcare practices. Its API support allows for integration with healthcare systems, and its generous file attachment limits make it viable for sending extensive medical records.
